The 2012 HUGO Award
That Wasn't
In honor of Jules Verne, and in keeping with the theme of the 2012 Worldcon, the design for the 2012 Hugo Award base is, fittingly, a small sector of the lunar surface; upon which the rocket has touched down.
The sculpture base is solid cast glass; approximately 1.75" thick and 8" in diameter (4.4cm x 20.3cm) weighing approximately 3 lbs. The surface "dust", mountains and craters are sculpted white and light grey glasses over the clear solid crystal base.
The rocket is attached with a standard 5/16-18 x 1 1/4" counterbored cap screw with a large diameter washer under the bolt head. Both are completely separated from the glass by nylon insulating washers. Very snug and stable while assembled, the rocket is easily removable for safe transport. This is not a flimsy or easily damaged sculpture, although proper care should always be taken with anything of value.
As is the case with all of our award creations, each sculpture is an individual; hand-crafted with care by American Craftsmen. While adhering to the overall concept, the crater and mountain patterns will exhibit slight variations in size, shape and location; allowing the personality that can only be born in a handmade work of art to emerge and shine through.
Joy and I are honored to have created award sculptures for many great individuals over the years. Even though we were informed that the design fit the 2012 theme perfectly, the committee decided to go with something else. The silver lining is, you can now have one of your own. Your non-Hugo rocket will differ some in shape but will be one of ours made in blown glass in any color you like—even metallic.
